KUDOS to C.J. Bernette Johnson

Justice Johnson: THANK YOU for remembering your common sense and rendering a fair opinion. So sorry it was not the MAJORITY. However, we should ALL remember today’s dissent can and should become tomorrow’s opinion and hope for a better future where these draconian and inhumane sentences and disparate impacts are history.

The importance of dissent as explained in the Georgetown Journal of Law & Public Policy

HAPPY JUNETEENTH EVERYBODY

In honor of Juneteenth: here are some quotes from Booker T. Washington

If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.
You can’t hold a man down without staying down with him.

Happy Constitution Day 2018

Today is Constitution Day….

Fun Q&A/fact:

Q: To whom does the U.S. Constitutional right to jury trial belong?

A: The Constitutional right to a jury trial belongs to the people living in America

Why?

Yick Wo v. Hopkins 1886

Wong Wing v. US 1896

Plyler v. Doe 1982

Because why?  EQUAL PROTECTION….

“The last two clauses of the first section of the amendment disable a State from depriving not merely a citizen of the United States, but any person, whoever he may be, of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, or from denying to him the equal protection of the laws of the State. This abolishes all class legislation in the States and does away with the injustice of subjecting one caste of persons to a code not applicable to another. . . . It [the 14th Amendment] will, if adopted by the States, forever disable every one of them from passing laws trenching upon those fundamental rights and privileges which pertain to citizens of the United States, and to all persons who may happen to be within their jurisdiction.”
